Notre-Dame de Paris: man shot by police after attacking them with a hammer



French police shot a man who tried to attck them with a hammer on the forecourt of Notre-Dame.

On Tuesday afternoon, a man tried to attack several police officers with a hammer on the forecourt of Notre-Dame, in Paris. A police officer was wounded. The attacker was heard shouting: "This is for Syria!"

Police shot the attacker. The suspect has been admitted to the hospital. His condition is unknown.

The attacker was identified as an Algerian student in his 40s. In addition to the hammer, he was armed with two knives.

The main square has been evacuated and the cathedral has been under lockdown, with 900 visitors inside, for more than an hour. The counter-terrorism section of the Public Prosecution service in Paris is in charge of the investigation.
